September and October can be some of the best months to visit Cornwall.

The beaches are quieter, the roads are less busy, many of Cornwall's favourite attractions are still open, and there can still be plenty of those beautiful sunny days Cornwall is famous for.

In other words, you can enjoy the best of both worlds – all the fun of a Cornwall holiday, without quite as much of the summer rush.

Is Cornwall still worth visiting after the summer holidays?

Absolutely.

There's sometimes a misconception that Cornwall starts to "shut down" once the school holidays finish. While some seasonal businesses do reduce their opening hours, there is still plenty happening across Cornwall in September and October.

Many of Cornwall's biggest attractions remain open, cafés and restaurants are still welcoming visitors, coastal paths are waiting to be explored and, of course, the beaches aren't going anywhere!

In fact, for many people, this is when Cornwall is at its most enjoyable.

You can have a day at the beach without quite as many people around, find a parking space a little more easily and explore popular attractions without feeling like you're battling through the crowds.

The weather can still be fantastic

Let's be honest – nobody can guarantee sunshine in Cornwall!

But September can bring some wonderfully warm and sunny days, and October can surprise you too.

The sea has also had the whole summer to warm up, so if you're brave enough for a swim, you may find the water surprisingly inviting.

Even when the weather isn't quite beach weather, autumn in Cornwall is a fantastic time for walking, exploring villages, visiting attractions, enjoying a long lunch or simply sitting somewhere beautiful with a coffee and watching the waves.

Quieter beaches, but not empty beaches

One of the biggest advantages of visiting Cornwall outside the school holidays is the beaches.

During July and August, Cornwall's most famous beaches can get incredibly busy. By September, things tend to calm down.

That doesn't mean the beaches are deserted – far from it. You'll still find surfers, families, walkers, paddleboarders and locals enjoying the coast.

You can enjoy a morning on the sand, take the dog for a walk, go for a swim or watch the sunset without quite the same summer crowds.

And if you're bringing your four-legged friend, the changing seasons can also mean more opportunities for coastal walks together.

Another reason September and October are such a good time to visit is that many of Cornwall's attractions are still open.

You don't have to choose between having good weather and being able to visit somewhere interesting.

The temperatures are often more comfortable than in the height of summer and the landscape starts to take on those gorgeous early autumn colours.

West Cornwall is particularly rewarding for walkers, with dramatic coastline, countryside lanes, sandy beaches and plenty of opportunities to stop for a coffee or a pub lunch along the way.
